Volunteers around the world: three experiences

The modern world also moves thanks to support of volunteers. How many times haven’t you heard about the selfless work of people in projects, causes or companies?

Today we will tell you about 3 specific volunteer experiences. Keep reading because you can be a part of these.

Microsoft’s volunteers

The Company created by Bill Gates has a program of volunteers focused on teaching computer science. Under the name of Technology Education and Literacy in Schools (TEALS), this is a Microsoft Philanthropies Program.

“I am a remote volunteer because I believe in sharing computer science knowledge with students who otherwise wouldn’t have access.”

Sierra Acy, Software Engineer and TEALS volunteer

You will be able to work with a remote class tool in two roles: teacher or teacher’s assistant. To get to know the details about this program, you can go check their Volunteer Guide.

It’s valid to point out that anyone with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or experience in the sector can be a volunteer. Also, in their page of FAQ, Microsoft indicates that you don’t have to be a worker at the company to be a volunteer at TEALS, 85% of the people currently involved are not from the company.

The company, with headquarters in Redmond, believes that only the support and participation of volunteers can bring technological education to partner high schools. This is why they work to bring to these centres the best study plans of the subject.

Estonia: Volunteers vs COVID-19

Coronavirus reorganized our lives since early on this year. This was leitmotiv for the startup Zelos to rethink its practices to help the elderly and summon the volunteers.

Zelos was created in the fall of 2019, to help event and festival directors with the delegation of tasks. The pandemic transformed this company’s point of views. That is why when the pandemic struck, Zelos’s team detected two big issues in their community:

  • Estonia has an elderly population that represents 19,7%, and it had a high risk of contagion.
  • There were people available to help others, but didn’t find a way to do so.

Members of the startup took part in the first #HackTheCrisis, a remote hackathlon centered in solutions to help the Estonian community deal with quarantine. This is where the COVIDhelp was victorious, a help line for the elderly, who weren’t always too knowledgeable of technology, and community volunteers that were ready to help them during the quarantine.

This is the silver lining to this terrible crisis: community means more to people when you have this common enemy. We need to beat this together. This brings people closer. This really shows that technology is not something that drives people apart. But it can be a connecting factor, by bringing different people together if you have the same access to the digital space.

Johanna-Mai Riismaa, founder and CEO de Zelos.

COVIDhelp assisted the local community and in less than a week recruited more than two thousand volunteers. This achievement came about with the support of Tele2 and Accelerate Estonia, which provided the phone lines, and the funds.

Currently, they have discontinued the configuration and the support for Zelos Community Helpline. But if you want to know more about this project you can consult their case study or contact the company.
