10 Zero Waste Tips

Are you committed with the environment? We offer you a small guide of Zero Waste Tips, so that if you want you can lead a life in line with the Zero Waste movement.

In two other articles we were commenting about people who are real Zero Waste lifestyle examples. This time we come with one proposition: give you some guidelines to reduce waste!

Before mentioning some tips for your daily life, we would like to remind you the basic principles of this environmental tendency.

Basic Principles of Zero Waste

  1. Reject all the things you don’t need. Why buy some new furniture if the ones you have are in perfect state and are very comfortable?
  2. Reduce what you need. Do you really need to cook 5 pounds of rice? Will nothing go to waste?
  3. Reuse what you use. The shopping bag can’t be used over and over again? Why throw it away?
  4. Recycle what you can’t reject, reduce or reuse. Why throw away that crystal bottle of soda that you just drank? Can’t you use it to store water or food?
  5. Rot the rest. Need some compost? Don’t throw away food wastes, use them as fertilizers.

Ideas for your Home

Now I’ll help you with some practical and simple ideas:

  1. Plan your shopping and avoid consumerism. Before going out shopping, make a list of what you really need. It’s an excellent way to not only take care of the environment-reducing waste- but to take care of your pocket as well.
  2. Use reusable or fabric napkins made out of cotton. Replace your paper napkins and instead use cotton or fabric ones. You can even make them yourself out of pieces of fabric that you don’t use anymore.
  3. Walk whenever you can. Whenever distance allows it, try and avoid other means of transportation. Choose to walk and contribute to eliminate toxic gas emissions. It’s also good for your health. You’ll also help if you use public transport, bikes or if you share a car with others.
  4. Read books, magazines and newspapers digitally. How many trees would need to be cut down if everyone read the printed versions? Use libraries and buy less books. Subscribe to websites that provide news and audiobooks, these are comfortable and healthy since we don’t have to overuse our sight.
  5. Prioritize digital marketing strategies for your company. Do you spend a lot on printed publicity for your company? Digital publicity has a broader reach. I recommend you reduce to the minimum the payment of insertions in printed magazines and focus your efforts in digital campaigns. Seize the social networks’ full potential!

Eat what expires first. It’s a good way to reduce food waste because it will avoid throwing away food because it has expired. You must pay attention to the expiration dates and to more perishable foods.

Buy second-hand clothes or recycled clothes. There are shops where you can buy recycled clothes of great quality and attractive prices. These are clothes that you can use in your daily activities. If you really care about the environment you can definitely do this.

Donate all the things you don’t use. Don’t throw it away or keep it at home if you know you are never going to use it. Give your stuff away to friends, shelters, churches, homeless people or people who have nothing left because of a natural disaster. Before throwing away food you can give it to your neighbor if he/she needs it. Another alternative is to sell the things you don’t use. Garage Sales are back in fashion.

Don’t use plastic bags. Use ecological bags. Do you know how much does a plastic bag take to degrade? 400 thousand years!

Create your own compost. Do you need compost for your garden? With fruit peels, leftover coffee, eggshells and dried plants you can make your compost and use it to fertilize your plants. You will return the nutrients to the soil!

The hashtag #StopTheWaste tries to raise awareness about food waste in developed and highly consumerist countries

If you join this worldwide movement, you will be taking one more step in your education and environmental culture. It’s an excellent way to improve your lifestyle and to help the environment.
